Formal Recruitment

Formal Recruitment ("Rush") is hosted by the University of Missouri Interfraternity Council (IFC) every fall. Formal Rush gives students seeking fraternal involvement -- often referred to as Potential New Members (PNMs) -- an opportunity to preview every fraternity.

​

Formal Recruitment begins with an expo, allowing PNMs to meet with representatives from each fraternity. After the expo, the process continues on a basis of mutual selection where PNMs will select chapters they are interested in, and chapters will select PNMs that they believe are the best fit.

Recruitment Terms to Know

​

Rush: Also known as new member recruitment. This is an opportunity to meet brothers and representatives from various fraternity chapters. This is an opportunity to learn more about the individual chapters and to start considering your interests. You're not making any commitments by visiting chapters during rush. You're encouraged to visit as many chapters as you can, and if you find any fraternities that you're interested in joining, you should considering attending their rush events when possible. Typically, the earlier you get involved with recruitment, the better.

IFC: Interfraternity Council. A department of the Mizzou Fraternity & Sorority Life (FSL) office, that serves as the governing body for fraternities at the University of Missouri.

​

PNM: Potential New Member. This is the classification given to students participating in the recruitment process that don't already belong to a fraternity.

​

Legacy: A PNM who has a relative who is a member of a specific chapter.

​

Bid: A formal invitation to join a chapter. You can receive as many bids as you'd like, however, once you accept a bid, you forfeit all other bids and are committed to that chapter.

​

Pre-Initiation: A ceremony where newly accepted Pi Kappa Phi PNMs officially become Associate Members and begin the Associate Member Education process.

Associate Member: A member (of Pi Kappa Phi) who has accepted a bid, has completed Pre-Initiation, and is progressing through the associate member education process.

​

Associate Member Education: Sometimes referred to as AME. This is a program where Associate Members learn about the history, values, and traditions of Pi Kappa Phi, while also learning more about themselves and their Associate Member brothers.

​

Initiation: Sometimes referred to as the Ritual of Initiation. This is a formal ceremony inducting you into a chapter. Should you choose, you can typically relinquish your bid to a chapter (quit) up until initiation. 

​

Active Member: A member of a fraternity who has completed the Ritual of Initiation and is in good-standing with their chapter.
